After some delays, the highly anticipated Nintendo Museum is finally set to open to the public on October 2, 2024. Nintendo recently announced the opening date and provided a first look at the unique facility dedicated to the company’s rich history.
Nintendo first revealed plans for its own museum in June 2021, choosing one of its former playing card factories in Uji, Kyoto, as the site for the new attraction. While the project was already in development at the time, construction only began in earnest in December 2021.
Nearly three years later, Nintendo has confirmed the museum’s grand opening date. The announcement was made during a Nintendo Direct on August 19, where legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto gave fans a video tour of the facility. The tour highlighted key features such as the museum’s main entrance, a Super Mario-themed plaza, various exhibits showcasing hardware and software, and a scenic café.
Accessing the Nintendo Museum: Public Transportation Only
The museum’s historical exhibits are primarily located on the second floor, featuring displays that cover every generation of Nintendo consoles and a comprehensive collection of the company’s games. Some classic games are also available for visitors to play through interactive experiences on the first floor. These activities require digital coins, which are provided via visitor passes. Notably, the museum will not offer car or bicycle parking, making it accessible only by public transportation, including the Kintetsu Railway Kyoto line and the JR Haruka Limited Express.
Ticket prices will range from approximately $7.50 for children to $22.50 for adults, with free admission for preschoolers. According to the museum’s FAQ, photography is generally permitted as long as it is not for commercial purposes and does not disturb other visitors. This includes video recording and live-streaming, although selfie sticks are prohibited. Pets are also not allowed, except for service dogs. The museum is wheelchair-accessible, and a limited number of wheelchairs will be available for loan at the information counter, though visitors are encouraged to bring their own if possible.
